A hedge fund is a private, largely unregulated pool of capital whose managers can buy or sell any assets, make speculative trades on falling as well as rising assets, and participate substantially in profits from money invested.

I have a friend who is a hedge fund manager and is also setting up a new zealand finance company which is basically a bank through you guys.
Hedge Fund Managers are like mutual funds without most of the government regulations. They can get a bunch of investors to pool in their money and the Hedge Fund Manager will use this money to purchase stocks, mutual funds, corporate bonds, even invest in some risky investments that can net really high returns, or invest in areas where you have to be quick to invest and get out quick with your returns. Much more flexible and quick to act than a mutual fund for example.
Hedge Fund Managers can make a lot of money if they receive a large amount of money invested in their funds through investors (and even more money if they make a good profit on those investments).
